AIRTRACK ADVENTURES
Take your special someone for a journey they won’t forget in a hurry. It’s an absolutely romantic and thrilling way to explore this country and all the animal attractions it’s famous for. Soar high up in a hot air balloon and keep your eyes open so you don’t miss sighting the Big Five in action from between the clouds. Especially fun is flying over Crocodile River Valley, northwest of Johannesburg, and the gorgeous Pilanesberg National Park near Sun City, witch is located in the crater of a long-extinct alkaline volcanic crater.

                         THE SAXON HOTEL
A boutique hotel beyond superlatives, The Saxon is exquisite, with African style interiors in shades of sand and brown. Formerly an insurance magnate’s private mansion, The Saxon is located in Jozi’s fanciest neighborhood, Sandhurst, a bower of coral trees, high walls and lush gardens. The hotel is steeped in the kind of history we love. Nelson Mandela stayed here after his release from prison, for instance, and it was here that he edited his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.

THE LION PARK
Start your day in the grand company of the King of the Jungle. The Lion Park offers visitors a chance to kick back and relax with lions and cubs in large enclosures, complete with photo-ops-under supervision, of course, let’s not be completely idealistic also. Should you have a weak heart or an easily distracted mind, there’s a whole family of other animals roaming this small game area as well –cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, antelopes and rhinos. There are even giraffes waiting to be fed, a delightful experience especially for children.

THE APARTHEID MUSEUM
It’s not on top of tourist lists, but this is the place that will help you understand South Africa and experience an extraordinarily powerful passage through its apartheid era. Opened in 2000, this museum is the work of top architects, curators, designers and landscape artists. Entrance tickets are cards indicating OENon White of OEWhite. Photographs, newspaper clippings, metal cages and nooses (121 dangle from the ceiling to represent the political prisoners during apartheid) all shock, but also give you a feeling of triumph at the indomitable human spirit.

WONDERCAVE
Wonder cave is a large, single chamber with absolutely stunning natural formations- up to 15m-high stalagmites and stalactites, rimstone pools, cave pearls and popcorn formations – all of which are being preserved such that their natural process aren’t interrupted in any way. Be prepared to take an elevator ride down 40m from the surface and walk the glowing paths into a different world altogether. But don’t touch anything, or you’ll be paying more than just the price of a ticket with a fine.

GRAMADOELAS
Get a taste of South Africa at Gramaddoels, one of the oldest restaurants in town. Sample the flavours of South Africa’s unique cuisine with dishes like masonja, Mopane worms with peri peri sauce. Other must-try includes bobotie (beef pie), sosaties (grilled meat with apricots), cubed crocodile tail, grated biltong and mielie (maize bread).

SUNDAY PICNIC CONCERTS
You can’t escape the pleasures of nature and wildlife in South Africa-and really, why would you even want to?  --But you can add a musical twist to you weekend in Johannesburg. That’s when the Witpoortjie waterfall at the Water Sisulu National Botanical Gardens is happy to take a backseat from its own splashy orchestra and let musicians and bands take over. Pack a picnic basket and spend a lazy day infused with all the right notes. Also check out Art in the Garden, the open-air art exhibitions the garden hosts.
