Wrapping Paper Musings

Tis the season to get angry. Yes, I mean Christmas. I love the holiday, and I love getting together with family. I even love giving gifts, and I always appreciate getting them. I don’t like wrapping paper though, even though some of it is just so beautiful. It seems like such a waste to take your time to wrap something up perfectly because it doesn’t last long. I like the idea of gift bags, but I know there is just something special about seeing gifts wrapped in wrapping paper lying under the tree waiting for you. I can get away with the bags for other family members, but for my daughter I just have to use the paper.
I thought a head last year and bought some wrapping paper during the after Christmas sales. I have enough paper for this year, I think, and I got it so cheaply it is not even funny. I have always been envious of people who think ahead like that, and know I know how satisfying it is, even though I only saved ten dollars. Still, ten dollars is ten dollars, and I don’t have to remember to buy it this year. I always seem to forget the wrapping paper and have to send my husband out in the middle of the night to get some.
Though I can handle wrapping paper rather well, it doesn’t mean I like it. I can always do a good package, and that means my mother tries to get me to wrap hers too. I have enough problems getting through my own without developing both a headache and a backache. I should start telling her that I’m not the one wrapping my gifts, and tell her that I am getting them done at the mall. That might backfire though, and she’ll think that I have more time to do hers. I need to move.
This year I will fight with the wrapping paper again, and I will enjoy my daughter ripping my hard work into shreds. It’s something that must happen each year, or I won’t feel like Christmas has come and gone. There are a lot of small duties we must do each year, and wrapping paper and bows are just a part of that. I’m waiting for someone to invent a machine that can wrap presents for you. I don’t care how much it costs. I’m buying it.
