Your baby shower is a very special occasion and so naturally it is only right that you should want to formally invite your guests. So, unless a baby shower is being planned as a surprise or is being arranged in a hurry, then a written invitation is almost always the most appropriate method to use. Where this is not feasible then personally inviting guests by telephone is acceptable but e-mailing your invitations should be avoided despite the fact that they may appear to be quick and convenient.
Provided your finances allow then your shower invitations can be custom printed but this is really unnecessary as there are many very good pre-printed invitations available either on the Internet or locally. As an very good alternative you can also design and make your own baby shower invitations as long as you have the time and a little bit of creative talent.
As is the case with any invitation to a party your guests will have to have some basic information such as the name of the person who is the subject of the shower, the name of the host, the date and time of the shower, the location and details of how to RSVP.
One other thing to consider adding is details of the theme of the event or the shower gift registry and this can be a little bit tricky because many people feel that this is presumptuous and places excessive pressure on your guests. Naturally this is a matter of personal choice, but one solution which generally works is to omit this from your invitations, request you guests to reply by telephone and then slip this tactfully into the conversion if guests do confirm their attendance. Do not forget though that you will have to have this information on hand when your guests telephone and etiquette states that you should only give out any shower gift registry information if your guest asks for it. When your baby shower is going to be a formal event then you cannot go far wrong if you stick to etiquette but, if your shower is less formal and involves only close friends then you can probably relax the rules a bit.
The timeline for a baby shower planning is very important and the greater the notice your guests are given the better. As a result, you should aim to mail your invitations out 4 to 6 weeks prior to the shower date and this is particularly important if out of town guests are being invited. Where this is not feasible then you should certainly aim to get your invitations out at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead of the party. Advance notice allows your guests time to organize their schedules, RSVP and go shopping for appropriate gifts.
It is also quite important for you to request your guests to phone you to let you know whether they will be coming. With everything involved in planning your shower the very last thing you need is to have to telephone around to find out if some of the guest plan on attending. However, there will almost always be some guests who do not reply and so one week before the party date you should make time to call those individuals to find out their intentions. An accurate head count will be a great help when it comes to making the necessary arrangements for your very special event.
